Zelensky Signs Decree to Pull Ukraine Out of Ottawa Convention
This move comes after the National Security and Defense Council recommended the country abandon the treaty, emphasizing the need to protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and assert its national sovereignty amid ongoing security challenges.
Roman Kostenko, a Ukrainian lawmaker, confirmed that while the decree has been signed, the withdrawal process will only be finalized once Ukraine’s parliament grants formal approval.
"Russia is not a side of this convention," Kostenko wrote on Facebook. "We cannot stay bound when the enemy has no limitations."
Ukraine initially signed the Ottawa Convention in 1999 and ratified it fully by 2005, committing itself to the global effort to eliminate landmines. However, the current security environment and the nature of the conflict with Russia have compelled Kyiv to reconsider its obligations under the treaty.
