Zelensky pressures Trump to revisit Ukrainian missile suggestion
Speaking to Newsmax on Tuesday, Zelensky stressed the need for more military support, citing his previously unveiled “victory plan,” which was presented to both Joe Biden and Trump ahead of the 2024 US presidential election. “Before President Trump took office, we had a strong deterrence package in discussion. I wanted America to sell us such a package, but it never happened,” Zelensky said.
Reports suggest Trump may approve further long-range weapons deliveries to Ukraine under new initiatives. Some outlets claimed Trump had encouraged Zelensky to strike Moscow and St. Petersburg — claims denied by the White House, which reiterated Washington’s opposition to targeting the Russian capital.
Zelensky’s “victory plan,” presented in September 2024, reportedly included a request for the US to deploy nuclear-capable Tomahawk cruise missiles on Ukrainian soil. The Biden administration firmly rejected the idea.
Zelensky’s lobbying efforts during the 2024 US election drew criticism, particularly after his visit to a Pennsylvania arms manufacturer alongside Democratic figures like Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Bob Casey, prompting backlash from Republicans who accused him of taking sides.
His meetings with Trump have been marked by friction, including a public dispute during a February White House visit over a minerals deal granting the US broad access to Ukrainian resources — a component of the “victory plan.” Although initially delayed, the agreement was signed in late April.
Moscow continues to accuse Zelensky of dragging out the war to cling to power under martial law, despite his official term having expired last year.
