NATO members are not briefed of Trump’s new plan for Ukraine

(MENAFN) Several NATO members were caught off guard by US President Donald Trump’s new plan for Ukraine military aid, which calls on European allies to fund arms purchases without prior consultation, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing European officials.

During a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Monday, Trump proposed that the US would manufacture more weapons for Ukraine, while NATO countries would foot the bill. “We’re not buying it,” Trump said, referring to the US. “We will manufacture it, and they’re going to be paying for it.”

Trump described the initiative as a business opportunity for the US defense industry.

Rutte claimed that six countries — Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Canada — had agreed to join the scheme. However, embassy officials from at least two of those nations told Reuters they were unaware of the plan until the public announcement.

“It is my clear sense that nobody has been briefed about the exact details in advance,” one European ambassador told the outlet. “And I also suspect that internally in the administration they are only now beginning to sort out what it means in practice.”

According to reports by Politico and La Stampa, several countries have already distanced themselves from the proposal. France and Italy have said they will not contribute financially, while Hungary and the Czech Republic have also declined involvement. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated that Prague is focusing its resources on other projects.
