Ukraine’s Parliament Votes to Oust Justice Minister
A total of 323 lawmakers backed the motion. Parliament speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk noted that Halushchenko, Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk, and Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko were absent from the session, provoking frustration among deputies who had anticipated updates on the situation.
The proposal was submitted by Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka, who linked it to “the public outcry over the ongoing investigations.” Following the vote, Stefanchuk promptly signed the dismissal into effect.
Anti-corruption authorities are probing a $100 million kickback and money laundering scheme involving high-ranking officials in the energy sector. Businessman Timur Mindich has been accused of orchestrating the scandal.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously urged the resignations of Halushchenko, who formerly served as energy minister, and Hrynchuk, who has also stepped down.
Additionally, the parliament’s legal committee expressed support for Halushchenko’s removal from office.
According to the investigating agencies, the operation began on Nov. 10 and revealed a network that influenced key state enterprises while laundering money through a back-office structure.
