Ukraine-U.S. Peace Talks to Take Place This Weekend

(MENAFN) Ukraine's leader announced Thursday that high-stakes negotiations with American officials will commence this weekend on U.S. soil, as international pressure mounts to broker a ceasefire with Moscow before a crucial European summit determines Ukraine's financial lifeline through 2027.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's president, confirmed that his delegation is already en route for Friday and Saturday discussions. "Our team will be in the United States on Friday and Saturday; they're already on their way there. The Americans are expecting them," Zelenskyy told reporters, suggesting European diplomats might participate as well. The Ukrainian side's composition remained undisclosed.

This weekend's diplomatic push follows intense trilateral negotiations in Berlin involving Ukrainian, American, and European representatives earlier this week. Those sessions centered on territorial disputes and security frameworks for Ukraine.

The talks will reportedly unfold in Florida before separate U.S.-Russian discussions take place. While official participant lists haven't been released, Politico revealed that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—President Donald Trump's son-in-law serving as an unofficial adviser—would anchor the American contingent. Moscow will dispatch Kirill Dmitriev, a trusted ally of President Vladimir Putin.

Presidential Vote Under Negotiation
In a stunning revelation, Zelenskyy disclosed that Washington has specifically requested presidential elections in Ukraine, though parliamentary and municipal contests remain off the table.

"The United States of America made a request for presidential elections and I told them that I would be ready for such elections. We did not consider elections to the Rada (Verkhovna Rada, or parliament) and local elections," he stated.

The president revisited his longstanding push for digital voting options, acknowledging legislative gridlock in the Verkhovna Rada. "I have always supported and raised the issue since the beginning of Covid regarding legislative changes so that people could vote online. So far, we have not found consensus with parliamentarians," he explained.

When pressed about whether lawmakers had initiated drafting election legislation, Zelenskyy acknowledged preliminary discussions only. "As far as I know, there hasn't been any yet, but I have given them all the signals," he added.
