Pope Leo calls for international efforts to end war in Ukraine

(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV on Sunday urged the international community to step up efforts to end the war in Ukraine and called for prayers for peace in all conflict-affected regions, including the Middle East.

Speaking after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the pope said Ukraine continues to suffer “relentless attacks,” leaving civilians vulnerable to harsh winter conditions. He expressed sorrow for those affected and emphasized the growing consequences of the conflict on ordinary people, warning that it deepens divisions and delays a just and lasting peace.

“I urge everyone to intensify their efforts to end the war,” he said, stressing the need to reject violence in all forms, whether in words or actions, and encouraging people to be builders of peace in everyday life—at home, at school, and in sports.

His remarks coincided with ongoing US-mediated talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, with a second round reportedly planned for next weekend.
