Zelensky Announces Rescheduling of Russia, Ukraine, US talks
The first trilateral talks, held on January 23-24, were the first since the Russia-Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022 and were described as “very constructive” by all parties. Territorial concessions remained a key obstacle, with Ukraine refusing to recognize Russia’s newly claimed borders.
The New York Times reported that the reason for the rescheduling is unclear, though it followed a surprise weekend meeting between Russian and US negotiators in Florida. Details were not disclosed, but US envoy Steve Witkoff described the meeting as encouraging, while Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev called it “constructive.”
Although the Abu Dhabi talks are trilateral, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that main US negotiators Witkoff and Jared Kushner would not attend, though a US presence is possible.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is ready for serious discussions and seeks an outcome that could bring the conflict closer to an end.
Russia typically avoids public comments on sensitive negotiations, arguing that Ukraine-style “megaphone diplomacy” is counterproductive. Moscow insists that any settlement must include Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donetsk and Lugansk—regions that voted to join Russia in 2022 referendums—and recognition of Crimea and other claimed territories. Kyiv has rejected these demands, insisting on regaining the territories despite ongoing military losses.
