Ukrainian Terrorist Plot with Suicide Bomber thwarted in Russia

(MENAFN) Russian authorities say they have intercepted a Ukrainian-backed terrorist operation in Sevastopol involving an unwitting suicide bomber, the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported.

According to the agency, a Ukrainian intelligence handler persuaded a local resident to deliver a portable speaker to the FSB’s regional headquarters under the pretense that it was part of a surveillance operation. The device allegedly contained an improvised explosive, which security personnel discovered and neutralized before it could detonate.

The FSB released what it described as instructions from the Ukrainian handler, claiming the unwitting accomplice would be offered a job at the FSB if he successfully completed the staged counter-espionage task, which involved scanning mobile phones at the security checkpoint for “traitors.”

Investigators say they have identified the alleged Ukrainian agent behind the plot as Ivan Krinov, a lieutenant in Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces currently living in Odessa with his family. The agency claims Krinov was also involved in a similar attempt last August to bomb the FSB HQ in Simferopol, in which a 54-year-old woman from Volgograd was tricked into delivering a device disguised as a Christian icon.

Russia intends to charge Krinov with terrorism and place him on an international wanted list.
