Zelensky Says US Proposes Ending Russia-Ukraine War by Early Summer

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that the United States is proposing that Moscow and Kyiv bring the nearly four-year conflict to a close “by the beginning of this summer.”

“The Americans are proposing that the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer, and will probably put pressure on the parties according to this schedule,” Zelenskyy told journalists, as reported by Ukrainian media, including state outlets.

He noted that domestic developments in the US, particularly the upcoming midterm election campaign, could influence this proposed timeline. When asked whether the US might withdraw from peace talks if the deadline is not met, Zelenskyy said he had not received any signal of this from Ukraine’s delegation during briefings on recent talks in the UAE, and added that it is “desirable” for Kyiv that the US remains engaged.

“They will probably just have a different priority -- Congress ... Let's not be naive. And they say that they want to do everything by June. And they will do everything to ensure that the war ends,” he added.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine plans to provide the US with a “sequence plan” for adopting documents related to ending the war, which will reach its fourth year later this month. He noted that the US has already proposed measures to coordinate the signing of all agreements tied to the conflict’s resolution.

The remarks come after two days of negotiations in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Feb. 4-5, involving Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington, which were followed by the first Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange in five months. A previous round of trilateral talks took place on Jan. 23-24 in the UAE capital.
