Ukrainian FM Says US Role Crucial to Ending Russia-Ukraine War
Speaking during a panel discussion titled “In Focus – Security Guarantees for Ukraine” at the Munich Security Conference, Sybiha outlined the current diplomatic landscape. He noted that three rounds of negotiations had already taken place in Abu Dhabi under a trilateral framework that included Ukraine, the United States and Russia.
Highlighting Washington’s role, he said: “We are making progress. And we are grateful to our American friends, because without Trump it is unrealistic to end this war. Under American leadership, we can make progress, but at the same time, we need to continue to put pressure on Russia. We still have the tools; we have to recognize this, this leverage,”
According to Sybiha, while Kyiv is advancing practical peace initiatives, Moscow has yet to demonstrate a serious commitment to meaningful dialogue.
“Instead, the Ukrainian side has feasible proposals. What we have now: the Americans are in the process, which is great. Under Trump’s personal leadership, we have a chance to accelerate our peace efforts. And Ukraine is ready with our feasible proposals. Naturally, no peace agreements at the expense of our territorial integrity and sovereignty,” he said.
Addressing reports of a 20-point peace plan, the minister explained that only three matters remain to be settled at the leadership level, indicating that substantial groundwork has already been completed. He stressed that Ukraine stands ready to move forward with tangible measures.
Looking ahead to upcoming discussions, Sybiha expressed optimism that the focus would shift from dialogue alone to implementation. “This is not about the process, it’s just that now is the time for action and for concrete steps,” he said.
