Polish Air Force Goes on Alert as Russia Strikes Ukraine

(MENAFN) Poland mobilizes fighter jets and raises air defense systems to maximum readiness early Sunday following a large-scale missile and drone attack by Russia targeting Kyiv and other regions in Ukraine, according to the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command.

“On-duty fighter pairs and an early warning aircraft were scrambled, and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness,” the command states on X.

Officials describe the deployment as a precautionary measure to secure Polish airspace, particularly along the border with Ukraine, where Russian attacks have intensified in recent days. Polish jets and defense units remain ready to respond if any threats approach or cross into national airspace, though the military emphasizes that no violation occurs.

The command also acknowledges support from NATO allies, including the Allied Air Command as well as the air forces of Germany and the Netherlands.

Ukrainian authorities report that the Russian military launched a coordinated assault late Saturday involving multiple missiles and suicide drones on Kyiv and surrounding regions. The attack represents one of the largest escalations of cross-border hostilities since the conflict in Ukraine begins on Feb. 24, 2022, now marking four years.
